that girl has girl, that girl has

OTPs.

[dun dun dun]

We all have them, whether we choose to acknowledge their existence or not. They're obnoxious little twats that always manage to weasle their ways into our hearts and minds, turning even the most ardent of anti-fangirls into psychotic of shippers. They destroy families and I'm pretty sure they're responsible for the Cold War.*

Anyways, I digress.

I tend to be a bit reluctant when it comes the infamous One True Pairing, usually possessing more than one in a single fandom and going off into the scandelous OT3/OT4 (because really, it's better with four). It's easier to ship things in book fandom, I find, because well, it's book fandom and it tends to stay solid for a bit longer than other fandoms. Harry Potter is a crazy fandom and to the point where I can sit the corner, play with my minor pairings and no one will ever notice me and I can ignore the crazies.

Good times.

Movie shipping is hard. Why? Because usually there is only one movie (unless it's a trilogy or something similar and even then, difficult) because the writers can always throw a fastball on you, but these sorts of fandoms in my experience tend to be a bit more stationary because once they're done they're done. Mind you, my experience with film OTPs (active shipping that is, not 'wow that's so sweet') is a grand total of oh, let me think, um none, so well, I can't really talk.

[Pauses. Battons down the hatches. Clears throat.]

Now, I move on to the televison sector of fandoms.

Ahem.

I have a copious love/hate relationship with telly OTPs. Why? Because the fucking writers always interfere! [momentarily rages] Yes, Joss, I'm looking at you.

I'm better now. I promise.

Now I have experience in these sorts of OTPs. And they're messy. Shippers tend to be crazy. Well, all shippers tend to be crazy, but these wars tend to be especially heated as the writers can get involved, especially if one takes a nice tumble down a flight of stairs and all hell breaks loose. I'm wary when I ship things on television shows, because I don't trust the writers anymore than I trust myself, because I know that I'm evil and thus believe them to be as well.

Remember Fred/Wesley on AtS? Yeah, I shipped them. They finally get together and she's gets killed for Illyria. Talk about crushing. I've shipped Logan/Veronica on Veronica Mars since before there was a Logan/Veronica (pfft LoVe, fuck off stupid cute name, we called Tinkerbell and the Lost Boy) and everyone thought he was a jackass (he still is, but people like him now), and that ship has been through the mill. I can keep listing, but I might get angry.

The grand problem with OTPs is that there are you know, people involved. People on all sides: the writers, the fandom, the actors. And people have opinions, wants, needs, crazy thoughts and thus tend to break out the insanity every so often. I'd say we could irradicate them, have OTPs without them or a world without OTPs, but I tried that and failed. It can't be done and you're lying if you think otherwise. Even if you try to ship against the predestined ship, you've still got an OTP. Just look at my Roswell days (mind you I was for CC couples all the way, so I can't talk).

I'm ending this now, while I'm still calm and maybe later I'll go in and meta about the infamous OTP in the RPG scenario: Does it really exist or is it just ego stroking of the authors involved? But meh, I don't have the energy/stamina for it and I like my hair on my head.

*Totally off the mark, unsubstantiated claim for humour.

WORD! I so get what you're coming from. *hugs* OTPs can be hard to have sometimes, lmao.

I think you're right.

Russia: Communism/Control of the world = OTP!
US: Uh, hell no. Democracy/Control of the world = OTP!
Russia: Bitches, I'll nuke your ass.
US: Don't think so.
The world: *tennis match nodding*
Both: We'll see. *makes bigger, scarier weapons ad nauseum*

Not too far off the mark.

When worst comes to worst, there's a little saying to get me through the hard times... "I blame RTD."

That, and "oh those crazy chippers."
